"The State is Everyone's Home"
Author: Oscar Luigi Scalfaro
Interviews on secularism, pluralism, and religious freedom
Writings to Adventist Pastor Vincenzo Mazza
Historical-political framework, with particular reference to relations with the Protestant world
Ninth President of the Italian Republic and an uninterrupted member of Parliament since the Constituent Assembly of 1946 and the first Parliament of 1948, throughout his political life Oscar Luigi Scalfaro always consistently defended the constitutional principle of the secular nature of the State.
Defined by many as a "secular Catholic," for Scalfaro the State was always "the home of all," an open place, capable of welcoming different sensibilities and diverse cultural and religious traditions.
Through some short writings, some previously unpublished, and some interviews on secularism, pluralism, and religious freedom, the volume focuses in particular on Scalfaro's relations with the Protestant world.
